“That Guy”, DC-Institution, passes away

Josh Burdette

Josh Burdette, often referred to as “That guy at the 9:30 Club”, passed away this week. Josh was the manager of the 9:30 Club, Washington, DC’s preeminent music venue for popular indie acts. As a frequent concert-goer, I’ve had Josh stamp my hand quite a few times and in person, as in this photo, he cuts quite an imposing figure, so I was happy to keep my interaction with him at that.

But in 2007, while shooting a Discovery Channel show in which Josh had a part, I got to know him personally and found him to be a much gentler soul than his outward appearance might indicate. I had a name for the face and enjoyed being able to say hi to him from then on. The last time I was able to do that was in July when I ran into him at a New Order show at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

I am saddened to know now that that was the last time I would see him alive, but grateful that I had the chance to get to know him more personally and be able to recognize the gaping hole Josh leaves in the DC community. We will miss you, Josh.
